MRS.
APPLEYARD'S BROWNIES
Mrs. Appleyard's Kitchen was published in 1942. My mother took it
out of the library. I am not sure she ever owned it. For some reason,
I remembered it years and years later. What I remember in particular was
the wit and style with which the book was written.
I searched and searched, but the book was out of print. I finally located
it through an Out of Print book finder. This is how the recipe appears
in her book:
1/4 c. butter, creamed
2 squares melted chocolate
1/2 c. flour
1/2 c. nut meats, chopped
1 c. sugar, white or brown+
2 eggs, broken into the mixture
1/2 t. vanilla
Mix in the order given. Spread in a shallow cake pan and bake at 350 degrees
for 15 minutes. If you shake a little sugar on them just before you put
them into the oven, it gives them a glossy appearance that is rather handsome.
If your favorite brownies are the thick kind like cake, this is not the
right rule. Thse are more on the chewy side.
